What follows is the latest news on the planned rollout of the new OCLC ILL Policies Directory scheduled for this weekend. This will impact access to WorldCat Resource Sharing early Sunday morning. Access to the Policy Directory will be effected Friday through early Sunday morning. January 10th.
“The problem that we encountered during the Policies Directory rollout on December 13th has been resolved and we will be installing the new directory on Sunday, January 10th.
Please note that we have extended the WorldCat Resource Sharing downtime on the 10th to allow more time for the installation.
The Policies Directory interface (https://illpolicies.oclc.org) will be unavailable from 5:00 pm Friday, January 8th through 8:00 am Sunday, January 10th EST.
WorldCat Resource Sharing will be unavailable on Sunday, January 10th from 2:00 am – 8:00 am EST.
The Policies Directory is a repository of interlibrary loan policies for WorldCat Resource Sharing libraries. The new Policies Directory has been completely redesigned including a new user interface, hardware platform and underlying database.
Your access to the data in the new Policies Directory will remain the same.
- Via the existing URL (https://illpolicies.oclc.org) using your OCLC ILL authorization and password.
- Through the WorldCat Resource Sharing interface, either by clicking the Policies Directory link or on the ‘Libraries that Own Item’ screen, by clicking on the red question mark (?) next to the library symbol
- Via the existing links in ILLiad and the WorldCat Services Administrative module.
All existing lending data (policies, deflections, contact data) will remain. You do not need to make any changes to your existing Policies Directory data.
A complete list of changes and enhancements is located at http://www.oclc.org/info/policies/“

Thought I would publish this information for everyone.
“A preview site is now available for the new Policies Directory interface which is being installed on December 13, 2009.
We invite you to take a peak at the new Policies Directory before it goes live on the 13th. Click the URL below and use the following authorization/password to login
authorization= 100028264
Password= oclc
https://policies-preview.oclc.org
A few things to keep in mind –
- You must use the demonstration authorization to log in. Your normal authorizations won’t work on this site. But, once you login you can search for your own library (or anyone else’s)
- The data in the preview environment is several weeks old. It was copied from the current Policies Directory in mid October and has not been updated since.
- The environment is not ‘live’. Changes made in this interface will not update the current Policies Directory.
- A few changes are still in progress. For example, the Help files have not yet been loaded.
- This preview site will be available 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EST through Friday, December 10th.
A list of the changes to the Policies Directory are included here http://www.oclc.org/info/policies/
Please send me any comments or questions that you have – Jennifer_corsi@oclc.org.”

Just a brief update on the labeling of Interlibrary Loan materials within MLS.
As of today, SWAN libraries may use the standardized three letter agency codes for full SWAN member libraries when addressing materials for MLS delivery. The only exceptions to this are the two college members of SWAN that receive their delivery via ILDS. Materials for Morton College (MRT on the ILDS label) and South Suburban Community College (SSC on the ILDS label) have to be routed using an ILDS label with the final destination written out and their symbol circled on the ILDS delivery label.
Lists are available on the MLS website -if you want a printout for reference:
Remember this applies only to full SWAN members, materials being routed to any library other than a SWAN library must be written out completely.

The new ILLINET Resource Sharing Policy Directory is pleased to join the statewide CE Calendar and ELI library data as part of L2. The directory is now online and waiting for libraries to enter their data. The Resource Sharing Directory includes Interlibrary Loan, Photocopy, and Reciprocal Borrowing policies. As an added feature, in order to assist libraries in meeting the ILLINET ILL Code, libraries will have the capability to upload their written ILL Borrowing and ILL Lending policies to the directory.
A short PowerPoint presentation introducing the directory has been created and posted to the MLS Resource Sharing website. The presentation covers creating an account and signing in to L2 to enter Interlibrary Loan, Photocopy, and Reciprocal Borrowing policies. Please view the presentation to learn how to sign in and enter policies for your library. Once libraries have begun to enter their policies, the real fun can begin for OCLC libraries as we create truly powerful custom holdings groups and paths to use in WorldCat. Photocopy policies include LVIS participation to enable libraries to identify other LVIS libraries in order to secure free photocopies. Reciprocal Borrowing policies include a description of any limits imposed on RB patrons, thereby enabling libraries to view Reciprocal Borrowing policies before their patrons visit neighboring institutions.
Watch for more presentations and information to be posted to the MLS website and blog. In addition, training opportunities will be available across the State and online via WebjunctionIL and OPAL. For further information, contact Kate Boyle at 630-734-5160.

The Library of Congress has a wonderful website for verifying newspapers. The website includes items held by the Library of Congress and other libraries listed in the Newspaper Title Directory. The Newspaper Title Directory is derived from the library catalog records created by state institutions during the NEH-sponsored United States Newspaper Program, 1980-2007.
Check out this handy resource when you are attempting to locate newspapers for a specific town. There is a search page where you can specify a search by a particular state, county or city. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/search/titles/
You can also view and search newspaper pages from 1880 to 1922 from the following states: California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Texas, Utah, and Virginia. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/search/pages/
Enjoy this resource.
