Resource Sharing Service Changes

MLS has announced a service change to the Resource Sharing Service. As of April 15th, MLS Resource Sharing will no longer facilitate Interlibrary loan borrowing and lending requests for the suburban members of MLS. Nor will the Resource Sharing office secure photocopies of journal articles for the membership after May 15th.

MLS Resource Sharing will continue to provide continuing education and consulting on Interlibrary Loan topics. In addition, Resource Sharing will provide verification support for items not readily identifiable on OCLC. Upon request, we will facilitate international interlibrary loans on a cost recovery basis. MLS Resource Sharing will continue to support both Reciprocal Borrowing and the Union List of Serials projects. Along with providing the suburban members with bookbands and the “Your Public Library” brochures.

I have prepared a short FAQ addressing a few anticipated questions and concerns. In light of this announcement, a new training calendar is being developed. I will post a list of CE opportunities as soon as possible. In the interim, don’t hesitate to contact me with your questions and concerns.

(3) impact of resource sharing options [interlibrary loan and reciprocal borrowing]
(4) effectiveness of statewide delivery
(5) trends that provide directions for addressing statewide needs, initiatives, and programs

I-Share planned downtime and update

“CARLI staff will be cutting over to a newly rebuilt Universal Catalog tomorrow evening, Thursday August 7, beginning at 5pm. During this event, the I-Share Universal Catalog will be completely offline. This task is not expected to impact other Voyager services including ?local? library catalog access via the web interfaces (WebVoyage and VuFind) nor should this impact any Voyager use by staff-use clients (circulation, cataloging, etc.) This change will be completed overnight Thursday and the new Universal Catalog should be completely online by 8am Friday, August 8. As always, should the work take longer, we will let you know, and will also let you know when it is successfully completed. If you experience problems after seeing the completion announcement, please contact CARLI by email or phone (see below for contact information).

This task will mark the completion of another implementation round of five new I-Share libraries. This brings the total number of I-Share libraries to 76.

The five new I-Share participating libraries are:

Adler School of Professional Psychology (ADL) Chicago School of Professional Psychology (CSP) Harrington College of Design (HCD) Principia College (PRC) Rush University (RSH)

The rebuilt Universal Catalog (UC) will reflect the holdings of all 76 I-Share libraries. The new version of the UC will now include more than 10 million bibliographic records (10,014,865 at last count). The five new I-Share libraries contributed 261,349 bibliographic records, including

62,006 for which one of these libraries will be the only holding library reflected in the Universal Catalog. They jointly have 11,595 current patrons. Except for Principia, which is located some 35 miles north of St.

Louis in Elsah, Illinois, the other 4 newest I-Share libraries are all located in Chicago.

At this time the work to enable these libraries for Voyager Universal Borrowing is also being completed. As soon as that work is done, the 5 new I-Share libraries will be able to place requests for materials held across the consortium and all I-Share libraries will begin to see these libraries?

collections being selected to fill their UB requests. We expect this UB work to be completed tonight or early tomorrow and we will send an announcement to update you on this tomorrow.

As always, thank you for your ongoing patience during these maintenance events.”

Please complete the survey below.

________________________________

As many of you know, due to the Governor’s vetoes, the Office of the Secretary of State/Illinois State Library was forced to make some tough choices yesterday regarding the services they provide to you and the people of Illinois. This resulted in the cancellation of statewide access to Wilson Select Plus and Periodical Abstracts.

Illinois Library Systems are interested in negotiating a group purchase for these databases to allow the people of Illinois to continue to enjoy access to these resources.

Completing this survey does not constitute agreeing to the purchase these databases. Illinois Library Systems are only seeking additional information from the library community as they determine the demand and need for this service.

We would appreciate your response to this short survey by the end of the day Monday, July 21. If you have any questions, please contact your local Library System.

FirstSearch databases for FY’09

The Illinois State Library has announced the FirstSearch databases to be included in this year’s offering of E-Rich resources.

“FirstSearch, from OCLC, Inc., provides library staff and end users access to a full collection of reference databases. With FirstSearch, materials in your library’s collection are highlighted in search results from an abundance of leading databases.

The Illinois State Library continues its 16th year of support to FirstSearch access for all ILLINET member libraries. FY2009 databases available at no charge include: ArticleFirst, Clase/Periodica, eBooks, Electronic Collection Online (ECO), ERIC, GPO Monthly, MEDLINE, PapersFirst, ProceedingsFirst, World Almanac–Full Text, WorldCat, and WorldCatDissertations.

Libraries currently subscribed to FirstSearch through the Illinois State Library’s E-RICH program do not need to re-apply. Libraries wishing to subscribe to FirstSearch through E-RICH can sign up at any time. To purchase additional FirstSearch databases, contact the Illinois State Library’s ILLINET/OCLC office, oclc1 at ilsos.net or 217-782-1532.” (http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/what_we_do/erich.html )

You may have noticed that the full text resources of Periodical Abstracts and WilsonSelect Plus are missing from this list of free resources. Unfortunately, they were not included in the offering this year due to budget cuts at the ISL.

The link in the MLS Union List of Serials to the title list of journals available via these two FirstSearch full text databases has been removed from the ULS interface in order to avoid frustration and or confusion.

For a complete description of the ISL E-Rich program and its offerings follow the aforementioned link.
